Lessons in Reconciliation from our First Contact History

Forward by Uncle Reg Blow

"In the first section, Jim Poulter shares some family oral history as well as positing links between the game of Marngrook with Australian Rules football. The second section explores spiritual structures of aboriginal culture at the time of European invasion. An easy and enjoyable read, with great yarns in the football section, and a simple but informative exposition of “Spirit, Flesh and Skin” in family groupings." (Reading)
Jim Poulter's family settled in the Yarra Valley east of Melbourne in 1840. His great-grandfather, Tom Chivers, spent a childhood immersed in the Aboriginal lifestyle. He attended the last initiation ceremony at Hanging Rock in 1851 and the last intertribal corroboree held in Warrandyte in 1852 when the last tribal football game of marngrook was played. In this book, for the first time the basic tenets of Aboriginal religion are explained and how the concepts of Spirit, Flesh and Skin are reflected both in tribal religion and social organisation.
