In the autumn of 1628, the Dutch East Indiaman Batavia set sail on her maiden voyage to Java, loaded with a king's ransom in gold, silver and gems. But, in the early hours of 4 June, the ship ran aground in an unexplored chain of islands off the coast of Australia. More than 200 survivers were left stranded, at the mercy of a ruthless band of muniteers headed by a brilliant but deranged individual.
