Australia’s first decimal commemorative coin in 1970 – the Captain Cook 50c.

It was issued to celebrate the bicentenary of the navigation of Australia’s east coast by Captain James Cook.

Commemorating the Brisbane XII Commonwealth Games.

Incorporates the Games symbol designed by Hugh Edwards to reflect the form of a kangaroo in full flight.

The coin depicts the bust of 'Weary' Dunlop and barbed wire symbolising his time incarcerated by the Japanese.

Lieutenant Colonel Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop, AC, CMG, OBE (12 July 1907 – 2 July 1993) was an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership whilst being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II. He was born in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia.

Australian Coat of Arms consisting of a shield depicting the emblems of the six Australian States. To the left and right of the shield are a Red Kangaroo and an Emu.
