Leben und Leistung Ludwig Leichhardts
In der neuen Reihe "Edition Petermann" stellt der Verlag Themen, Probleme und Persönlichkeiten vor, die entweder bereits im verlegerischen Schaffen von August Petermann eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt haben oder aus aktueller Sicht im Sinne Petermanns zu wichtigen Fragen der Geographiegeschichte wertvolle Beiträge leisten.
Dies trifft in besonderer Weise für Leistung und Schicksal des deutschen Australienforschers Ludwig Leichhardt (1813-1848) zu, dessen großes Ziel, den fünften Kontinent als erster Forscher von Ost nach West zu durchqueren, er mit dem Leben bezahlen musste. Im Vorfeld des 150. Jahrestages dieses auch für die Wissenschafts- und Entdeckungsgeschichte Australiens und Deutschlands bedeutsamen Ereignisses stellt Dietmar Felden, ausgewiesener Wissenschaftsjournalist, Leben und Leistung Ludwig Leichhardts vor.

Italians in Postwar Australia
This book constructs a suggestive, dramatic and colourful portrait of migrants' everyday life in 1950s and early 1960s Australia, by focusing on important aspects such as health, sexuality, self-beautification, love, and morality. The book considers two columns edited by Lena Gustin (Mamma Lena) for the Italian-language newspaper in Australia La Fiamma between 1956 and 1964. Furthermore, the historical analysis is based on hundreds of original letters that Italian migrants wrote in the same years to the two columns or directly to Gustin. Most of these letters were never published in the newspaper, or were strongly edited before publication. Gustin's selection and editing eliminated most of the explicit references to the body, sexuality, and violence. This 'editing of the body' opens up important questions about the construction of Italian ethnic identity by the migrant élites and by scholars.

Im Februar 1932 startete das Wasserflugzeug Atlantis von Köln zum Flug um die Erdteile Europa, Asien, Australien, Richtung Amerika, rund um die Welt.
Von den üblichen Schwierigkeiten einer solchen Expedition abgesehen, verlief der Flug planmäßig - bis zum 15. Mai. An diesem Tag startete die Atlantis von Java aus zum Flug über die Timorsee Richtung Australien. Die Maschine wird in Port Darwin erwartet - aber sie kommt nicht an. Als die Flugzeit, die sie mit ihrem Benzinvorrat in der Luft bleiben kann, verstrichen ist, besteht kein Zweifel mehr: die Atlantis, das erste deutsche Wasserflugzeug, das den Erdteil Australien besuchen will, ist notgelandet oder abgestürzt.

Sofort setzt die Suchaktion ein, zu Wasser, zu Lande und in der Luft. Erfolglos - die Atlantis ist und bleibt verschollen. Und dann geschieht das Unglaubliche - nach 53 Tagen größter Entbehrungen, Hunger und Durst kehren die Flieger Bertram und Klausmann zurück in die Zivilisation.

Australia is currently the second largest exporter of raw sugar after Brazil, and one of the world's top five sugar exporters. This book tells the story of how the Australian cane sugar industry grew into a major global supplier of sugar, how it became a significant innovator in the technology associated with the growing and harvesting of sugar cane as well as the production and transport of sugar. It describes the spread of sugar cane growing along the north-eastern coast of Australia during the late nineteenth century, and how subsequent twentieth-century expansions were tightly regulated in order to avoid overproduction. It examines changes in agricultural techniques, efforts to combat pests and diseases, breeding new cane varieties and the significance of improvements in the sugar milling and refining processes.
