Elsie Roughsey was born into the the Lardil tribe of Aborigines from Mornington Island or Goonana, in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria, in 1923. She tells of Aboriginal life soon after the first missionaries arrived in the tribe.

Raised in a dormitory mission and in the traditional life of her tribe, she writes about power, religion, love and marriage, childbirth, medicine, education, crime and punishment across both worlds.

This is a book of great charm - and a rare and significant portrait of an Aboriginal life during a period of acute and often traumatic change.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "Click Go the Shears" (Roud # 8398) is a traditional Australian folk song. The song details a day's work for a sheep shearer in the days before machine shears. The enduring popularity of this song reflects the traditional role that the wool industry has played in Australian life. The song describes the various roles in the shearing shed, including the "ringer", the "boss of the board", the "colonial experience man" and the "tar boy". After the day's shearing, the "old shearer" takes his cheque and heads to the local pub for a drinking session.

The tune is an adaptation of the American Civil War song "Ring the Bell, Watchman" by Henry Clay Work and the first verse follows closely, in parody, Work's lyrics as well.

The second verse in the original 19th century song is as follows:
Click goes his shears; click, click, click.
The ringer looks round, for he lost it by a blow,
And he curses that old shearer with the bare belled ewe.

The usual chorus of the song is as follows:

Click go the shears boys, click, click, click,
Wide is his blow and his hands move quick,
The ringer looks around and is beaten by a blow,
And curses the old snagger with the bare-bellied yoe

In June 2013 it was discovered that a version of the song was first published in 1891 in the regional Victorian newspaper the Bacchus Marsh Express under the title "The Bare Belled Ewe" and the tune given as "Ring the Bell Watchman." That version was signed "C. C. Eynesbury, Nov. 20, 1891,"[1] Eynesbury being a rural property located in the Bacchus Marsh area.[2] It is possible that "C.C." was the author of the song.

There was a shearers' strike in 1891 so the publication of the song in that year would have resonated with the Australian community.[3]

The song was next published in 1946 as a traditional song "collected and arranged" by Reverend Dr. Percy Jones, a professor of music. The lyrics vary widely; "bare-bellied yoe" (yoe is a dialect word for ewe) is often "bare-bellied joe" or even "blue-bellied ewe". The last line in the verse about the "colonial experience" man "smelling like a whore" is often bowdlerised to "smelling like a sewer" or completely rewritten.

Im Februar 1932 startete das Wasserflugzeug Atlantis von Köln zum Flug um die Erdteile Europa, Asien, Australien, Richtung Amerika, rund um die Welt.

An diesem Tag startete die Atlantis von Java aus zum Flug über die Timorsee Richtung Australien. Die Maschine wird in Port Darwin erwartet - aber sie kommt nicht an. Als die Flugzeit, die sie mit ihrem Benzinvorrat in der Luft bleiben kann, verstrichen ist, besteht kein Zweifel mehr: die Atlantis, das erste deutsche Wasserflugzeug, das den Erdteil Australien besuchen will, ist notgelandet oder abgestürzt.

Sofort setzt die Suchaktion ein, zu Wasser, zu Lande und in der Luft. Erfolglos - die Atlantis ist und bleibt verschollen. Und dann geschieht das Unglaubliche - nach 53 Tagen größter Entbehrungen, Hunger und Durst kehren die Flieger Bertram und Klausmann zurück in die Zivilisation.

From Wikipedia: In Australian history, a selection was a "free selection before survey" of crown land under legislation introduced in the 1860s, similar to the United States Homestead Act. Selectors often came into conflict with squatters, who already occupied the land and often managed to circumvent the law.

The Bulletin magazine published the illustrated collection comprising 26 stories in 1899 as On Our Selection. Within four years 20,000 copies had been printed. It afterwards appeared in numerous low priced editions and by 1940 the number of copies sold had reached 250,000.
